Petrol Dealers Raise Concerns
Petrol pump owners have raised concerns over the government’s new fuel relief scheme, saying they were not properly informed about how the program would be implemented at filling stations. The government has announced a Rs100 per liter petrol relief for eligible motorcycle, rickshaw, Qingqi, and small-car users. However, dealers say they need clear instructions before they can smoothly provide the subsidized fuel.
Rs100 Per Liter Relief
Under the government scheme, eligible motorcycle and two- or three-wheel vehicle users can receive Rs100 per liter of relief on up to 20 liters of petrol per month. Owners of vehicles with engines up to 800 cc can receive the same relief of up to 30 liters per month. The government has introduced the scheme to reduce the impact of rising petrol prices on lower and middle-income consumers.
Dealers Say They Need Clear Instructions
Petrol pump owners say the scheme requires proper coordination between the government, oil companies, and filling stations. Without clear information about the verification process, fuel tokens, and payment mechanism, dealers could face difficulties when customers begin using the subsidy. The concern is particularly important because the scheme depends on petrol stations verifying eligible customers before providing discounted fuel.
How the Digital System Works
The government has introduced a digital system to identify eligible users. Citizens are required to register using a SIM registered in their own name. Their CNIC and vehicle information are then checked through government databases and provincial vehicle records. After successful registration, eligible users can obtain a fuel token and present it at a participating petrol station to receive the discount.
Scheme Being Rolled Out in Phases
The relief program is being introduced in phases. The scheme started in Islamabad on the night of September 14 and 15. It is scheduled to expand to the rest of Pakistan, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, from the night of September 16 and 17. This phased rollout gives authorities time to address technical and operational issues.
Petrol Prices Remain High
The relief scheme comes as petrol prices remain under pressure because of higher international oil prices. Pakistan had already increased petrol prices earlier in September, with the price reaching Rs375.82 per liter before another increase was announced for September 16. The rising cost of fuel has increased pressure on households and people who depend on motorcycles and small vehicles for their daily travel and work.
Millions Are Expected to Benefit
The government expects millions of people to benefit from the targeted subsidy. Motorcycle and rickshaw users are among the main beneficiaries because fuel costs can make up a significant part of their daily expenses. The government is using digital verification instead of providing a general reduction in petrol prices for everyone.
Coordination Is Key
For the scheme to work smoothly, petrol dealers will need clear instructions about customer verification, fuel tokens, and the payment process. Better coordination between government departments, oil marketing companies, and petrol stations could help prevent confusion when more customers begin using the relief. The government has already developed the digital system, but its effectiveness will depend on how smoothly it operates at the ground level.
Relief Scheme Faces Its First Test
The petrol relief program is intended to provide immediate support to people affected by high fuel prices. However, concerns from petrol pump owners show that implementation remains an important challenge. Clear communication with dealers will be necessary to ensure eligible customers can actually receive the promised discount without unnecessary delays.
