Torrential Rain Batters the Twin Cities
Heavy rainfall has hit Rawalpindi and Islamabad, inundating low-lying areas and disrupting normal life across the twin cities. The intense downpour caused water to accumulate on roads and in residential areas, while several nullahs and drainage channels saw a sharp rise in water levels. Authorities placed relief and emergency departments on high alert to deal with any developing situation.
Nullah Leh Reaches Dangerous Levels
The water level in Nullah Leh rose sharply following the heavy rainfall, prompting authorities to issue warnings and begin evacuating residents from vulnerable areas. According to reports, the water level reached around 29 feet at Kattarian, creating serious concerns for people living near the nullah and in surrounding low-lying neighborhoods.
Rescue and Emergency Departments on Alert
All major relief and emergency departments, including Rescue 1122, WASA, and the district administration, were placed on high alert. Emergency teams were deployed to affected areas to monitor the situation, assist residents, and manage drainage problems caused by the torrential rain. Rescue 1122 also carried out evacuation operations in several parts of Rawalpindi.
Roads and Low-Lying Areas Flooded
The heavy rain caused urban flooding in several areas of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Roads became waterlogged, making travel difficult for motorists and commuters. In Islamabad, overflowing drains affected areas, including E-11 and Ghauri Town, with water entering roads and some building basements. Authorities deployed dewatering pumps and emergency teams to deal with the flooding.
Rawalpindi Records More Than 200mm Rain
Rawalpindi received more than 200 millimeters of rainfall in some areas during the intense spell. The exceptionally heavy downpour disrupted normal activities and placed additional pressure on the city’s drainage system. Reports described the rainfall as among the heaviest recorded in recent years.
Residents Advised to Avoid Unnecessary Travel
Authorities urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and remain cautious, particularly in areas affected by water accumulation and flooding. Motorists were advised to drive slowly, allow extra travel time, and avoid flooded roads where possible. Residents living close to nullahs and other vulnerable locations were also asked to remain alert and follow official instructions.
Schools and Educational Institutions Affected
The severe weather also disrupted educational activities in Rawalpindi, where authorities announced a holiday for educational institutions due to the emergency situation. The decision was taken as heavy rain continued and the water level in Nullah Leh reached dangerous levels.
More Rain and Flooding Risks Remain
Weather authorities have warned that further rainfall could increase the risk of urban flooding, particularly in low-lying areas of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Emergency departments are continuing to monitor the situation as authorities work to manage drainage and respond to any new emergencies caused by the ongoing weather conditions.
