PM Orders Direct Flights Between Karachi and the Maldives
Pakistan’s prime minister has reportedly directed officials to take steps toward establishing direct flights between Karachi and the Maldives, a move that could improve air connectivity between the two countries and make travel more convenient for passengers. The proposed route could benefit tourists, business travelers, and people travelling for official engagements by reducing the need for connecting flights through other destinations. However, the launch timeline, airline arrangements, and flight frequency would depend on further planning and implementation by the relevant authorities.
Government Orders Feasibility Study for Direct Flights
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed the Ministry of Aviation to prepare a feasibility study for launching direct flights between Pakistan and the Maldives. Speaking at the Maldives–Pakistan Business Forum in Islamabad on October 22, 2026, he said officials should explore whether Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) or another carrier could operate the service. The prime minister also called for aviation authorities to consult their Maldivian counterparts and develop a practical plan to begin flights as soon as possible. The announcement marks a step toward improving air links between the two countries, where direct services had not been operating at the time of the announcement.
Maldives’ National Airline Also Plans Karachi Flights
Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said his country’s national airline aims to establish a direct air link between Malé and Karachi soon. He noted that better connectivity could make travel easier and create opportunities for tourism, trade, and investment. The two governments have also agreed to pursue stronger transport links as part of wider efforts to expand economic cooperation. However, an official launch date, flight schedule, and ticketing details had not been confirmed in the announcements cited here.
Direct Flights Could Boost Tourism and Business
A direct Karachi–Malé route could make the Maldives more accessible to Pakistani tourists while helping business travellers move between the countries with fewer travel connections. The Maldives’ tourism sector also offers potential opportunities for Pakistani businesses, including suppliers of food, pharmaceuticals, and other goods. President Muizzu highlighted the importance of stronger air and maritime connections during his visit, encouraging airlines and businesses to develop commercially viable transport links.
Pakistan and Maldives Set $200 Million Trade Target
The proposed air link is part of a broader push to increase bilateral trade. During the business forum, Shehbaz Sharif and President Muizzu discussed raising trade between the two countries from approximately $13 million to $200 million over the next two years. The leaders also emphasized the importance of reliable shipping connections between Pakistani ports and Malé. Pakistan also plans to send a business delegation to the Maldives to explore export and investment opportunities. Improved air and sea connectivity is expected to be an important part of efforts to turn the trade target into practical results.
When Will Direct Flights Begin?
Although both governments have expressed support for direct flights, passengers should wait for an official announcement confirming the launch date, operating airline, frequency, and ticket availability. For now, the key development is that Pakistan has ordered a feasibility study while the Maldives’ national airline has expressed its intention to establish a Malé–Karachi connection. The next steps will depend on consultations between aviation authorities and the airlines involved.
