Google Maps Gets a Useful New Feature

Google Maps Is Becoming More Helpful

Google Maps is getting a major update that could make everyday navigation and trip planning much easier. Google has expanded its AI powered Ask Maps feature, allowing users to interact with Maps in a more natural way instead of simply searching for a location or typing a destination. The update is part of Google’s wider effort to turn Maps into something closer to a personal travel assistant.

You Can Now Ask Maps Questions

With Ask Maps, users can ask more detailed questions about places, restaurants, events, hotels, and travel plans. Instead of searching several times, people can describe what they are looking for and receive suggestions based on their request. The feature uses Google’s Gemini AI alongside information from Maps, including places, reviews, and other local details.

Food Ordering Gets Easier

One of the more interesting additions is the ability to order food through Ask Maps. Users can describe what they want, including dietary preferences and where they would like to pick up the food. Google says the feature works with partners including Square and Toast, while Uber Eats support is also planned. This means Maps is moving beyond simply showing restaurants and getting users closer to actually completing an order.

Finding Hotels and Events

The new update also makes it easier to discover hotels and local events. Users can ask for recommendations based on personal preferences, such as finding a hotel near a particular place or an event that matches their interests. Maps can then provide relevant options instead of making users go through multiple searches themselves.

Maps Can Understand Your Plans

Google has also introduced Personal Intelligence features that can connect Maps with other Google services, including Gmail when users give permission. This can help Maps understand travel details such as upcoming flights or reservations and use that information when making recommendations. For frequent travellers, this could make planning a trip feel much less complicated.

Real Time Transit Updates

Another useful addition is improved real time information for public transportation. Users can receive live updates for buses, trains, subways, and ferries, helping them make better decisions while travelling. This could be particularly useful in busy cities where delays and changing schedules can quickly affect a journey.

A More Personal Google Maps

Google has been gradually changing Maps from a simple navigation app into a broader discovery and planning tool. Earlier this year, the company introduced Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation, using Gemini to provide conversational answers and more detailed guidance while driving. The latest update takes that idea further by helping users move from searching for something to actually making plans.

What This Means for Users

The biggest change may be the way people interact with Maps. Instead of thinking about the exact words needed for a search, users can simply explain what they want in everyday language. Whether someone needs a restaurant, wants to find an event, plans a trip, or needs public transport information, Google Maps is increasingly trying to handle the whole process in one place. The new features are rolling out in stages, with availability varying by country and feature.
