The students belonged to S.M. Law College and Islamia Law College and had initially been declared unsuccessful in at least two subjects. Their results were later revised following a scrutiny process approved during the tenure of the university’s acting vice chancellor.

Results Changed After Scrutiny

According to documents cited by The Express Tribune and The News, a scrutiny committee met on August 5 to consider the results of LLB Part II students. The committee reportedly recommended re-examining answer scripts, after which revised marksheets were issued. Some students who had originally received zero or very low marks were allegedly awarded marks ranging from 50 to 65.

Questions Over University Rules

The controversy largely centers on whether the scrutiny process followed University of Karachi regulations. Former vice chancellor Dr Khalid Iraqi said the annual examination system allows scrutiny for recounting marks but does not permit the rechecking of answer scripts. He also said that an earlier collective application for scrutiny had been stopped because the rules required students to submit individual applications.

Acting VC Approved Recommendations

Reports say the scrutiny committee was chaired by Dean of Law Barrister Sarfraz Metlo and included representatives from the two law colleges and the examinations department. The committee’s recommendations were reportedly approved by acting vice chancellor Dr. Tufail Ahmed on August 6. The approval allegedly included the wording “other related cases,” after which students who had failed in Pakistan Studies were also included in the process.

University Officials Give Different Accounts

The developments have produced conflicting statements from university officials. Karachi University Controller of Examinations Dr Yasir reportedly rejected the allegation that failed students had been passed, saying the information was incorrect. Meanwhile, S.M. Law College Principal Professor Farid Dayo said students had been treated unfairly and that their cases were taken to the scrutiny committee.

Documents Under Scrutiny

The reported investigation includes original and revised marksheets, award sheets, minutes of the scrutiny committee meeting, and approval documents. These records have become central to questions about how the students’ results were changed. The university’s handling of the matter is now expected to face closer examination as questions remain over the procedure followed.

What Happens Next?

The controversy now puts the university’s examination procedures and oversight mechanisms under attention. The newly appointed vice chancellor, Dr. Waseem Qazi, may face questions over whether the changes should be reviewed and whether the process complied with university regulations. Until any formal inquiry or official decision is announced, allegations surrounding the result changes remain subject to investigation.

Controversy Over Revised Results A controversy has emerged at the University of Karachi after the results of around 150 LLB students were reportedly changed from failed to passed.
