PM Calls Meeting Over Concerns About Used Car Imports

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif calls meeting over used car imports in Pakistan

Prime Minister Reviews Used Car Imports

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has summoned a meeting to review the recent rise in used vehicle imports into Pakistan. The meeting is expected to examine imports made under both commercial and gift schemes and assess their impact on the local automobile industry. Government officials are also expected to present updated data before the prime minister considers further policy directions.

Used Car Imports Rise Sharply

The meeting comes after a significant increase in used vehicle imports during recent months. According to Commerce Ministry data reported by Dawn, Pakistan imported 2,276 used vehicles in September, compared with 1,445 in August and 1,938 in July. Most of the September vehicles, 2,238, were imported under the Gift Scheme.

Local Automakers Raise Concerns

Local vehicle manufacturers and parts producers have expressed concern that a continued increase in used car imports could affect domestic production. Industry representatives argue that locally assembled vehicles support a large network of assemblers and auto-parts manufacturers. They are seeking measures that would maintain competition while also protecting local manufacturing and employment.

Importers Support More Competition

Used car dealers and importers have taken a different position, arguing that greater access to imported vehicles can increase competition and provide consumers with more choices. They have also pointed to continued demand for imported Japanese vehicles. Importers say vehicles brought into the country under the applicable framework remain subject to inspection and regulatory requirements.

Changes to Import Rules

The latest controversy follows changes announced by the Engineering Development Board on September 30 concerning commercial imports of used vehicles. Reports say the revised framework relaxed some requirements for commercial importers and changed the inspection mechanism. The changes have prompted renewed debate among government bodies, local manufacturers, and importers over how used vehicles should be regulated.

Safety and Regulatory Questions

The issue also involves questions about vehicle safety, environmental standards, and inspection procedures. The government has previously stated that imported used vehicles should meet prescribed safety and environmental requirements. A Sindh High Court bench has also sought details of a federal cabinet meeting while hearing a petition concerning enforcement of United Nations regulations for imported used vehicles.

Government to Decide Next Steps

The prime minister’s meeting could provide direction on how Pakistan will handle the growing volume of used vehicle imports. Officials are expected to review the latest import figures and concerns raised by both industry representatives and importers. Any decision could have implications for vehicle prices, consumer choice, local manufacturing, and the future regulatory framework for used cars in Pakistan.
