PM Relief Scheme: Digital System Activated for Cheaper Petrol

Petrol station and fuel pump imagery, accompanied by a news-style headline about Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Rs100 per litre petrol relief scheme for motorcycles, rickshaws, Qingqis and small cars.

Digital System Activated

The government has activated a new digital system for the Prime Minister’s special petrol relief scheme. Under the scheme, eligible citizens will receive a Rs100 per liter discount on petrol. The system has been developed by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication in coordination with provincial departments, NADRA, and telecom operators.

Who Can Get the Petrol Relief?

The scheme is mainly aimed at people who use motorcycles, rickshaws, Qingqi rickshaws, and small cars. Motorcycle and two- or three-wheel vehicle owners can receive the discount on up to 20 liters of petrol per month. For vehicles with engines up to 800 cc, the relief will apply to up to 30 liters per month. This means eligible motorcycle and three-wheeler users can save up to Rs2,000 per month. Small-car owners can receive a maximum monthly benefit of Rs3,000.

Automated Vehicle Verification

The government has introduced an automated system to check whether applicants and their vehicles qualify for the relief. The system will connect with provincial transport and excise departments to verify vehicle details. This is expected to make the process more accurate and reduce the chances of false or incorrect claims. Digital verification will also make it easier for authorities to manage the scheme across different provinces.

Registration Process

Registration for the petrol relief scheme has started. The government will provide more information about the registration process through a public awareness campaign. Applicants will also need a SIM registered in their own name. The digital system will connect applicants’ identity and vehicle information with official government records.

Relief to Begin in Phases

The petrol discount will be introduced in different phases across the country. In Islamabad, the scheme is scheduled to start from midnight between September 14 and 15. In other parts of Pakistan, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, the relief is scheduled to begin from midnight between September 16 and 17.

Why Was the Scheme Introduced?

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the relief program after a sharp rise in international oil prices. Tensions in the Middle East and disruptions around major oil supply routes have pushed global crude prices higher. The increase has also raised fuel costs in Pakistan, putting additional pressure on household budgets. The government says the scheme will provide targeted support to people who depend on motorcycles, rickshaws, and small vehicles for travel and work.

Millions Could Benefit

According to estimates from the Petroleum Division, around 11.8 million users could benefit from the program. The estimated beneficiaries include about 10 million two-wheeler users, 800,000 three-wheeler users, and around 1 million small-car owners. Instead of giving the same subsidy to all petrol consumers, the government is using the digital system to target those considered most in need of support.

Relief for Daily Fuel Costs

For motorcycle riders and rickshaw drivers, petrol is often a major part of their daily expenses. A Rs100 per liter reduction could help reduce their monthly fuel costs. It may be particularly useful for people who use their vehicles to travel to work or earn their income. The government hopes the scheme will provide some relief from the impact of higher fuel prices.

A Digital Approach to Fuel Subsidies

The new system represents a shift toward using digital technology to manage government fuel subsidies. By connecting identity, SIM, and vehicle records, authorities aim to verify eligible users and deliver the benefit more efficiently. The success of the scheme will depend on a smooth registration process, accurate verification, and effective implementation at petrol stations across the country.
