Recovery Team Finds Asma Mushtaq’s Body
The body of Pakistani mountaineer Dr. Asma Mushtaq has been recovered from Spantik Peak in Gilgit-Baltistan, nearly 10 days after she died while descending from the mountain. The 34-year-old climber had successfully reached the 7,027-meter summit of Spantik before suffering a serious high-altitude medical emergency during her descent on August 20.
Search Operation Faced Difficult Conditions
Earlier attempts to recover Asma Mushtaq’s body were unsuccessful because of heavy snowfall and strong winds on the mountain. A new team of experienced high-altitude mountaineers from Shigar launched another recovery mission after weather conditions allowed them to continue the search. The difficult conditions made the operation particularly challenging.
Body Found Near Camp 3
The rescue team began its operation early in the morning and found Asma Mushtaq’s body after several hours of searching. Her remains were recovered near Camp 3 at an altitude of around 6,250 meters. The team then began bringing the body down toward the lower camps and base camp.
She Had Successfully Summited Spantik
Asma Mushtaq was part of a Pakistani women’s expedition team that successfully climbed Spantik Peak. According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, she was in good health after reaching the summit but later developed a serious medical emergency at high altitude while descending.
A Difficult Recovery Mission
Recovering a body from above 6,000 meters is an extremely dangerous and challenging task. Helicopters cannot retrieve climbers directly from such high altitudes, meaning recovery teams must carry the body down the mountain before air transport can be used. The operation was carried out by experienced local mountaineers despite difficult weather and high-altitude conditions.

The recovery of Asma Mushtaq’s body has brought an end to days of difficult search efforts on Spantik Peak. Her death has highlighted the dangers faced by mountaineers in Pakistan’s high mountain ranges, where rapidly changing weather and high-altitude medical emergencies can make rescue and recovery operations extremely difficult.
