Government and Dealers Reach Agreement
The government and petrol pump owners have reached an agreement to ensure the smooth implementation of the Prime Minister’s Fuel Relief Scheme. The agreement addresses concerns raised by petrol dealers over how they would be reimbursed for the Rs100 per liter subsidy given to eligible consumers.
Dealers Raise Reimbursement Concerns
Petrol pump owners had earlier expressed concern that they could not afford to provide the Rs100 discount without a clear payment mechanism. The Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) had asked the government to guarantee timely reimbursement so that filling stations would not have to bear the cost of the subsidy themselves. The latest agreement is expected to remove this uncertainty and help dealers continue providing subsidized petrol.
Rs100 Per Liter Petrol Relief
Under the government scheme, eligible motorcycle, rickshaw, and Qingqi users can receive Rs100 per liter relief on up to 20 liters of petrol per month. Owners of vehicles with engines up to 800 cc can receive the same relief of up to 30 liters per month. This means the maximum monthly benefit is Rs2,000 for two and three-wheelers and Rs3,000 for eligible small cars.
Payments to Petrol Stations
The government has said payments to fuel stations will be settled quickly through the banking system. Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar directed that payments to petrol stations should be settled within 24 hours through the State Bank of Pakistan. This arrangement is intended to prevent dealers from facing cash-flow problems while providing the subsidy to customers.
Scheme Already Underway
The fuel relief scheme began in Islamabad before being expanded nationwide. Registration is available across Pakistan through SMS, while fuel tokens can be redeemed at participating petrol stations. The government has also directed authorities to establish facilitation desks at petrol stations to help citizens with registration and other problems.
Millions of People to Benefit
The scheme is aimed mainly at people who depend on motorcycles, rickshaws, and small cars for their daily travel and income. The government introduced the subsidy after a sharp increase in fuel prices linked to the wider Middle East conflict and disruptions in global oil supplies.
Dealers Agree to Support the Scheme
With the reimbursement issue being addressed, petrol dealers have agreed to cooperate with the government in implementing the relief program. The agreement is expected to reduce confusion at petrol stations and make it easier for eligible consumers to receive the discount.
Relief Scheme Faces Implementation Test
The agreement between the government and petrol pump owners is an important step toward smoother implementation of the fuel subsidy. However, the success of the scheme will depend on timely payments, accurate verification, and effective coordination between government departments, fuel companies, and petrol stations. If these arrangements work as planned, eligible consumers should be able to receive their petrol relief without major delays.
