Gemini AI Comes to Chrome
Latest News: Google will integrate its Gemini AI feature into the Chrome browser for U.S. users starting Thursday. The rollout follows a federal judge’s decision to spare the company from a forced antitrust breakup.
Antitrust Ruling Benefits Google
Earlier this month, a Washington judge ruled that Google does not need to sell Chrome, marking a significant win for the tech giant in its ongoing battle with U.S. antitrust regulators. However, Google was ordered to share data with competitors to promote fair competition in online search.
Availability for Desktop Users
The Gemini AI models will initially be available to Mac and Windows desktop users in the U.S. whose browser language is set to English. This feature aims to enhance browsing with AI-powered tools and productivity enhancements.
Expansion to Mobile
Soon, Apple’s iOS Chrome app will also receive Gemini integration. In the coming weeks, the feature will roll out to businesses via Google Workspace and will be accessible on mobile phones in the U.S.
Deeper App Integration
Google has built deeper integration between Gemini in Chrome and its apps, including Calendar, YouTube, and Maps. Users can expect AI-powered assistance across multiple platforms to streamline daily tasks.
Upcoming AI Capabilities
In the coming months, Gemini will gain agentic capabilities to perform multi-step tasks automatically. It will also be able to locate previously visited webpages and summarize content from multiple sites, among other upgrades.
Competing in AI Browsers
The move positions Google to compete with other AI-powered browsers, such as Perplexity’s Comet, which performs tasks on behalf of users and recently made a $34.5 billion unsolicited offer for Chrome.
Maintaining Market Control
The antitrust ruling allows Google to retain control over Chrome and the Android operating system while restricting certain exclusive contracts with device makers and browser developers. Google may continue paying partners like Apple to feature its search engine, a key component of its dominance. Reports indicate that Apple is exploring using Gemini AI to enhance Siri.
